Flex FileSize… damn that’s big!
I’ve been having some fun with Flex/AS3 and have gotten to a pre-alpha stage with the project I mentioned in my previous post. It’s www.sailingvideos.org, I’m pretty close to scrapping it and writing all my components from scratch. Flex isn’t too bad to work with, though damn is there some filesize overhead! an empty project is at least 100Kb and my simple video viewer and accordion menu ends up at around 450Kb… a little too high for my liking.
My current attempt at building a clone with raw AS3 is now at a whopping 5Kb! Mind you I’m not yet as far along as the Flex app, though I imagine it should come in at maybe somewhere around 20Kb (I’m not sure if I’ll be implementing the accordion) with some additional overhead for font outlines.
